“It is with profound sadness that we announce that the World’s Greatest MC who ever lived, Bob Barker has left us,” publicist Roger Neal said in a statement Saturday. Barker died peacefully at his home Saturday morning in L.A. Bob died of natural causes.
The longtime host of “The Price Is Right” actually got his start in game shows after legendary producer Ralph Edwards discovered him while listening to Bob’s radio show and hired him for TV.
When producers hired Barker to host “The Price Is Right” in 1972, they hit the jackpot. The game show had faded significantly from its glory days in the late ‘50s and had been punted by two networks before it landed at CBS.
In Barker, the show found its voice, and it has continued to air a decade and a half after he retired.
Barker was the perennial host of “The Price is Right,” the longest-running game show in North American Television history for over 35 years on CBS daytime and hosted a nighttime version and primetime specials on CBS of“The Price is Right.” Barker won an impressive 19 Emmys during his career, 5 of them for Outstanding Game Show Host. Barker came into America’s home nighttime and daytime daily for over 50 years, his career in radio and television before retiring spanned over 60 years. In his honor, CBS Named the studio where The Price is Right was taped, The Bob Barker Studio. Time Magazine named him The Greatest Game Show Host of all time. Barker was inducted in the Television Hall of Fame in 2004, and into the National Association of broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2008.
Barker retired from hosting “The Price is Right” after 50 years on TV in 2007.
