Free June Arts Programming on Ovation TV’s Art House

In June 2022, ART HOUSE celebrates both PRIDE MONTH and JUNETEENTH. Curated programming below.

PRIDE MONTH – Starting June 1

 American Canvas – Hosted by actor/comedian/writer Dave Holmes (MTV, Reno 911), this Ovation original series explores the historic and creative communities unique to San Francisco, CA, Austin, TX and Miami, FL.

Artist to Icon – Goes beyond the constraints of the velvet rope to reveal some of the most extraordinary rises to fame the world has ever seen – this episode covers global superstar Cher.

Berlin Live – Presents a diverse mix of some of the world’s most accomplished musicians performing, reading, storytelling – in short, creating something extraordinary, in front of an intimate audience at an exotic club in Berlin. This episode features Boy George and Culture Club.

Celebrity Conversations – Film critic David Poland sits down with the biggest names in entertainment for an in-depth conversation about their art, craft and life. These episodes feature interviews with Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, and Ian McKellen.

CHER: Life in the Spotlight (2019) – A legendary musician, a timeless icon, Cher has secured her legacy amongst the stars. Starting out as a young girl with crippling stage fright, evolving into one of the most recognized figures in Hollywood.

Jean-Michel Basquiat – Documentary special about the acclaimed Brooklyn-born artist.

Lil Nas X: Unlikely Cowboy (2022) – A look at American rapper and songwriter Lil Nas X’s wild ride to fame as an unlikely cowboy, as he has carved his way to fame through the unapologetic celebration of his queer identity.

Little Ashes (2008) – In the midst of the repression and political unrest of pre-Spanish Civil War, eccentric artist Salvador Dalí (Robert Pattinson) and renowned poet and revolutionary Federico García Lorca (Javier Beltrán) find their artistic and sexual freedom. The two form a bond challenged by their fierce ambitions, their friends, the struggle between a love for Spain and a love for each other.

London Live – Rita Ora performs a collection of great hits in a private performance for this London Live special. The show also includes an exclusive and very entertaining interview with the star herself.

Pop Profiles – Demi Lovato’s story is told chronologically through their major hit singles. We chart their career from the earliest performances to the time they were signed to a major label and their breakthrough single was released all the way through to today. New interviews with emerging pop acts, music journalists and record producers to add insight into the life of Demi Lovato.

Rebels on Pointe (2017) – Filmmaker Bobbi Jo Hart reveals the history of Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo — the all-male, drag ballet company founded over 40 years ago on the heels of New York’s Stonewall riots.

Speakeasy – Cyndi Lauper, the Grammy award-winning singer and social activist, sits down with Tony Award winner Billy Porter, star of Kinky Boots, to discuss how not only music, but how Kinky Boots has changed their lives and the importance of self-acceptance.

JUNETEENTH – Starting June 19

The Art Detectives – Art historians examine some of the lesser known works among Britain’s largest collections. They look for lost masterpieces and examine the history and lineage of each piece from creation to collection. With hosts Dr. Bendor Grosvenor and Emma Dabiri.

The Art Of – This Ovation original series explores the worlds of Hip Hop, Sneakers, Fashion, Hair, Pop-Ups, and Music.

Celebrity Conversations – Film critic David Poland sits down with the biggest names in entertainment for an in-depth conversation about their art, craft and life. These episodes feature interviews with Antoine Fuqua, Djimon Hounsou, Samuel L. Jackson, David Alan Grier, Keegan-Michael Key, and Barry Jenkins.

The Color of Medicine (2018) – The story of Homer G. Phillips Hospital which provided state-of-the-art medical training to over two-thirds of all African-American physicians and nurses from 1937 to 1979. While its founder was mysteriously killed, the hospital in his name thrived.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: Enough Is Enough (2021) – He was an extraordinary leader, with vision and ambition. He would fight tirelessly until his last days against injustice. By fighting for his dreams and against injustice, he powerfully impacted generations and he changed the world.

Echoes ‘Cross The Tracks (2012) – The mighty Mississippi River bleeds muddy water into an alluvial plain. Thousands of slaves were brought in from West Africa to the Mississippi Delta. Music helped them endure and the dust rose from their feet as they danced. In fact, their pain became the source of a new sound, The Blues.

Eddie Murphy: Laugh ‘Til It Hurts (2020) – Almost six decades later Eddie Murphy remains loved by fans for his infectious smile and goofy laugh. Learn about many challenges Eddie is faced with along his way to stardom as Eddie continues to make his fans Laugh ‘Til it Hurts.

Everybody Loves Chris Rock (2021) – The boy from Brooklyn who endured bullying at an all-white high school remains in the past. The last laugh now belongs to Chris Rock be it on stage or the silver screen. Despite Rock dropping out of high school and working humble fast food jobs.

The Forgettable Life of Liam White (2021) – An author fights for his life while reconciling his past. Starring Shaun Woodland, Terrence ‘T.C.’ Carson, and Jasmine Guy.

Frankie Drake Mysteries: Music at Midnight (2021) – Features performances by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Chantel Riley and Sharron Matthews.

Front and Center – The unique one-hour all-music program presents an eclectic mix of Grammy winners, rock icons and multi-platinum sellers performing in intimate venues. Featuring episodes on Gary Clark Jr., Jon Batiste, Nile Rodgers, and Seal.

The Great Songwriters – Authoritative and entertaining series featuring original portraits of songwriters discussing the creative process and their inspiration, including exclusive performances and interviews. Featuring episodes on Chuck D, Bill Withers, and Seal.

The Green Room with Nadia Brown – A five-part original comedic journalism series celebrating and exploring the creative economy. Hosted by Broadway actor Nadia Brown (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child).

Hamilton: One Shot to Broadway (2016) – The remarkable story of how a group of inspired mavericks made an unlikely marriage of hip-hop and history the biggest musical show in America.

Icons Of Our Time – Muhammad Ali is not only considered among the greatest heavyweights in boxing history but arguably the greatest sports personality of all time. We meet George Lois, the photographer behind the legendary Esquire cover, and Lawrence Lusting who photographed many of Ali’s fights.

Inside the Actors Studio – The legendary interview series featuring episodes with Will Smith, Halle Berry, David Oyelowo, Alfre Woodard, and Lupita Nyong’o.

Lady You Shot Me: Life and Death of Sam Cooke (2017) – American singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur Sam Cooke died at the age of 33 on December 11, 1964, at the Hacienda Motel, at 9137 South Figueroa Street, in Los Angeles, California.

Legends of Opera – A docuseries celebrating the great opera singers of our time. Featuring Jessye Norman.

Shakura S’Aida – Rhino Jazz Festival – Shakura’S Aida is undeniably one of the most authentic artists of her generation in Canada and around the World. This international musician had enriched for over 25 years the musical scene of the Jazz and Blues with her warm voice and her other artistic influences such as R&B. Zac Harmon – Rhino Jazz Festival 2016 – Zac Harmon’s fate is like no other: a bluesman from Jackson who was about to turn 50 and has known many musical lives! His warm and rousing voice resembles Luther Allison’s. On the guitar side, Zac takes his influences from his idol, Albert King.
