Murdoch Mysteries is a wonderful Canadian series about police detective, William Murdoch, investigating crimes in turn-of-the-century Toronto, Ontario. Murdoch invents many of his ground-breaking techniques of investigation and forensics, and in the process he meets such luminaries as H.G. Wells, Houdini and the Wright Brothers.
Yannick Bisson stars as Detective Murdoch alongside Thomas Craig as Inspector Thomas Brackenreid , Helene Joy plays Dr. Julia Ogden, Murdoch’s romantic interest, Jonny Harris adds a little comic relief as Constable George Crabtree.
Murdoch Mysteries are based on series of novels by Maureen Jennings, and Yannick Bisson does an excellent job of bringing the Murdoch character to life. The stories are engaging, the writing is clever and adds a bit of wit that you usually don’t find in a period mystery series. The stories mix historical fact with fiction and often sends me to the Wikipedia, only to find that some of the more unlikely elements of the story are factual history.
Of course my Canadian readers already are aware of the virtues of the stories, but now the series is headed for American basic cable, on Retro TV.
For those fans that are already caught up on the first eight seasons, as you know, when we last saw Constable George Crabtree, bach in March, he was in quite a pickle, and I can’t wait until the series returns to the CBC on October 5, 2015 to find out how they resolve the delema.
For US viewers, look for Murdoch Mysteries to join the Retro TV lineup later this fall, alongside their other critically-acclaimed science fiction, fantasy and mystery shows. What series of Murdoch Mysteries have been aired in the Portland Oregon area in the past years. I can buy many series as a gift but want to order some that have not been aired or are not soon to be shown on Retro.
