Left picture: At the time this photo was made, smoke billowed 20,000 feet above Hiroshima while smoke from the burst of the first atomic bomb had spread over 10,000 feet on the target at the base of the rising column. Six planes of the 509th Composite Group participated in this mission: one to carry the bomb (Enola Gay), one to take scientific measurements of the blast (The Great Artiste), the third to take photographs (Necessary Evil), while the others flew approximately an hour ahead to act as weather scouts (08\/06\/1945). Bad weather would disqualify a target as the scientists insisted on a visual delivery. The primary target was Hiroshima, the secondary was Kokura, and the tertiary was Nagasaki. Groundbreaking two-hour documentary “Hiroshima and Nagasaki: 75 Years Later<\/em><\/strong>,” co-produced by A+E Networks(R) International, HISTORY(R) U.S. and Hulu Japan, will premiere\u00a0on Hulu\u00a0Japan and on HISTORY in the United States on\u00a0Sunday, August 2; and on HISTORY Japan on August 30,\u00a0it was announced jointly today by Steve MacDonald, President, Global Content Sales and International, A+E Networks;\u00a0and Kazufumi Nagasawa, Managing Director and Chief Content Officer, Hulu Japan.<\/p>\n

Directed by award-winning documentarian James Erskine (“Billie<\/em>,” “This is Football<\/em>,” “Sachin: A Billion Dreams<\/em>“), the premiere in Japan, the only country in the world that has been subject to bombing by nuclear weapons, will be followed by a U.S. premiere titled “Hiroshima: 75 Years Later” on HISTORY on Sunday, August 2 atPM ET\/PT.<\/p>
