The stop-motion animation series My Melody & Kuromi, featuring the globally popular Sanrio characters, is set to premiere exclusively on Netflix on July 24. As fans of the duo know, My Melody is a straightforward and cheerful girl who does things her own way; while Kuromi, her self-proclaimed rival, may seem like a troublemaker, but actually has a girly side. In this original tale, these two polar opposites face a major incident that threatens the fate of Mariland, their home. The series will unfold over twelve 13-minute episodes, capturing the adventures and growth of these two adorable characters.
The newly released trailer showcases My Melody and Kuromi‘s lively expressions as they go on a journey to save their hometown. The new key art unveils original characters made for this series, along with the other residents of Mariland. Additionally, the fearless K-pop group LE SSERAFIM has been revealed as the singer of the theme song “Kawaii (Prod. Gen Hoshino),” with a first glimpse of the song in the trailer. This series, filled with delightful cuteness, perfectly celebrates the 50th anniversary of My Melody and the 20th anniversary of Kuromi.
In Mariland, My Melody opens a bustling cake shop with her friends Flat and Piano, drawing in customers every day. Meanwhile, Kuromi’s Japanese sweets shop across the street is always empty, fueling her determination to beat My Melody’s shop. One day, My Melody encounters a pink heart in the forest, which sets off a series of strange events in Mariland – and the two are suddenly faced with a crisis that threatens everyone. Can they protect their town and their friends?
The members of LE SSERAFIM – KIM CHAEWON, SAKURA, HUH YUNJIN, KAZUHA, and HONG EUNCHAE – who are currently on their first world tour 2025 LE SSERAFIM TOUR ‘EASY CRAZY HOT’, were thrilled to work with the super-cute Sanrio characters. It turns out they’re big fans themselves! “Kawaii (Prod. Gen Hoshino),” part of the fearless quintet’s upcoming 4th Japanese Single DIFFERENT as well as the theme song of My Melody & Kuromi, marks the first collaboration between LE SSERAFIM and Gen Hoshino, a driving force in pop music, who produced, composed, arranged and wrote the song. Hoshino wanted the song to capture the world of My Melody & Kuromi and the charm of LE SSERAFIM, reflecting the show’s message about believing in yourself and being brave.
Group leader KIM CHAEWON, whom LE SSERFIM fans often say resembles My Melody, expressed her excitement: “We really love My Melody and Kuromi, so we were thrilled to be chosen to sing the theme song!” SAKURA, known among fans for her love of Kuromi, shares, “This song embodies the theme ‘cuteness is strength.’ We hope to show how LE SSERAFIM combines charm with strength, turning each member’s individuality into a source of empowerment.” HUH YUNJIN, who co-wrote the English lyrics with Gen Hoshino, remarks, “I hope everyone will listen to the song and appreciate the lyrics.” KAZUHA, who has been seen wearing My Melody items on social media and has long wished to collaborate with Gen Hoshino, expressed her delight: “I am truly honored to have the song produced by him.” Finally, HONG EUNCHAE shares her thoughts on the series: “I was really captivated by the adorable world of Mariland! The characters’ expressions were very rich and entertaining to watch.”
