Dion, previewing her discussion on “TODAY,” shared the profound impact this condition has had on her life and career. When attempting to sing, she likened the sensation to pressure on her larynx and pharynx, with attempts to modulate her voice resulting in spasms.
Viewers can catch the full primetime special at 10PM ET/9PM CT on Tuesday to hear more about her journey.
The spasms, which can manifest throughout her body, are so severe that they have led to broken ribs, Dion revealed. This revelation comes after she initially disclosed her diagnosis in a heartfelt Instagram video in December 2022.
During her conversation with Kotb, Dion detailed how the syndrome affects various parts of her body, including her throat, abdomen, spine, and ribs. Simple tasks like pointing her feet or assuming certain positions while cooking can trigger debilitating cramps and immobility.
Stiff-person syndrome is an extremely rare condition, affecting only one to two individuals per million. Those with the disorder often experience stiffness in their torso and limbs, coupled with intense muscle spasms that may result in falls. These spasms can occur spontaneously or be provoked by specific stimuli such as loud noises, physical contact, or emotional stress.
Dion’s battle with stiff-person syndrome led her to cancel her European tour in 2023, citing health concerns. Despite her ongoing struggles, she received a heartwarming standing ovation at the Grammys in February when she surprised audiences with a special appearance to present the album of the year award.
