The series unfolds a stranger-than-fiction story of Mickey Grosman, a former special forces demolitions expert who took a group of amateur adventurers on a nearly impossible journey across South America.

Back in 2012, a man named Mickey Grosman announced that he was going to lead a hike across South America in a bid to raise money and awareness for cancer research – and filmed the entire thing in the hopes of making a documentary.

Participants were to be part of a 5,000-mile expedition across the continent through the deepest parts of the Amazon jungle. Only one claims to have made it to the end… Mickey Grosman.

Footage from an upcoming docuseries about an Amazon expedition ‘from hell’ has revealed how one hiker arrived grossly unprepared – filling his backpack with 50 condoms rather than vital supplies.

Following him with blind faith, the group of greenhorn adventurers, who haven’t had any sort of training — find themselves rappelling down a steep waterfall. One by one, each person steps up to their position and begins to work their way down the cliff face, hoping to land in one piece. “Take it easy” are the only words Grosman gives to one of the group as he has a very rough launch and landing. Laughing maniacally at the fear of those under his tutelage, Grosman isn’t the person anyone would want steering them around the jungles of the rainforest.

The waterfall rappel is just one example of the pure insanity awaiting audiences in Expedition From Hell: The Lost Tapes. Featuring interviews from those who experienced the madness of Grosman firsthand, the miniseries also uses more than 700 hours of archival footage that was filmed along the chaotic trail through the Amazon. Just when you think it couldn’t get any crazier, it does, as Grosman’s name is tied to a kidnapping, a prison escape, and even a missing persons case. In fact, the ex-special forces demolitions expert had so many secrets, many of those on his South American adventure didn’t learn the full scope until they were sitting in front of the camera for their interviews.

Along the way, the group faced a slew of terrifying near-death experiences and serious injuries, and came face-to-face with dangerous wildlife and hostile indigenous tribes – and many began to wonder if they’d ever make it out alive.
