Acclaimed Mexican actor Ana Ofelia Murguía has died. She was best known in the U.S. for voicing the elderly matriarch, Mama Coco, in the 2017 Disney Pixar film Coco. She was 90 years old.
The Mexican actress’ death was announced by Mexico’s National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature on Sunday. “With deep sadness, we regret the sensitive death of the leading actress Ana Ofelia Murguía,” the company wrote in a statement on X (formerly known as Twitter). They added that Murguía “was part of the stable cast” of the National Theater Company, whose career “was vital for the performing arts of Mexico.”
“We send condolences and warmly hug his family and friends,” the statement concluded.
Ms. Murguía was born in 1933. According to the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature, her career in Mexican film, theater, and television spanned 60 years. She graduated from institute’s National School of Theater Arts in 1957 and went on to appear in more than 70 plays and over 90 films — often as a villain.
The actress won three Ariel Awards, Mexico’s equivalent of an Oscar, for “Cadena Perpetua” (1979), “Los Motivos de Luz” (1986) and “La Reina de la Noche” (1994). In 2011, she was honored with a Golden Ariel for her lifetime achievements.
