Take a special look behind the scenes at the upcoming Netflix Limited Series, ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE. Directed by Shawn Levy and based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel from Anthony Doerr.

In this exclusive new video, go behind the scenes for a sneak peek at All the Light We Cannot See, a groundbreaking new limited series premiering on November 2.

Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Anthony Doerr and starring Mark Ruffalo, Hugh Laurie, Dark breakout Louis Hoffman, and newcomer Aria Mia Loberti, the series is directed and executive produced by Shawn Levy, written by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders), and will have its world premiere at TIFF this coming Sunday, September 10.

Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, All The Light We Cannot See is a groundbreaking limited series that follows the story of Marie-Laure, a blind French girl, and her father, Daniel LeBlanc, who flee German-occupied Paris with a legendary diamond to keep it from falling into the hands of the Nazis. Relentlessly pursued by a cruel Gestapo officer who seeks to possess the stone for his own selfish means, Marie-Laure and Daniel soon find refuge in St. Malo, where they take up residence with a reclusive uncle who transmits clandestine radio broadcasts as part of the resistance. Yet here in this once-idyllic seaside city, Marie-Laure’s path also collides inexorably with the unlikeliest of kindred spirits: Werner, a brilliant teenager enlisted by Hitler’s regime to track down illegal broadcasts, who instead shares a secret connection to Marie-Laure as well as her faith in humanity and the possibility of hope.

Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner over the course of a decade, All The Light We Cannot See tells a story of the extraordinary power of human connection – a beacon of light that can lead us through even the darkest of times. Directed by Shawn Levy and written by Steven Knight, the four-part limited series introduces newcomers Aria Mia Loberti and Nell Sutton as the older and younger Marie-Laure respectively, and stars Mark Ruffalo as Daniel LeBlanc, Hugh Laurie as Uncle Etienne, Louis Hofmann as Werner, Lars Eidinger as Von Rumpel, and Marion Bailey as Madame Manec.

Watch never-before-seen interviews with the cast and the creative team of All the Light We Cannot See discussing adapting the award-winning novel, casting the character of Marie Laure authentically and equitably with an actress who is blind, and hear from Mark Ruffalo and Hugh Laurie on working with Aria Mia Loberti in her first ever acting role.

(Please note: All interviews were captured during production in 2022)

“Shawn tells stories that no matter how many pyrotechnics and hijinks are going on, there’s real human connections at the base of them,” said Doerr. “That’s how it got started. Just my sense that the project would be in good hands.”

“It was one of the great thrills of this experience to be there with a novelist whose work I revered,” said Levy. “And to see him there as he touched the model of St. Malo, as he saw these characters go from his head to standing there in the room with him. He was so happy to know that we had done this right, to know that we had honored his creative work with our creative work. It meant the world to me.”

Representing the character of Marie-Laure authentically and equitably by casting an actress who is blind with newcomer Aria Mia Loberti:

“Aria is someone who understands this character in her soul,” said Levy. “She’s never auditioned, she’s never thought about being an actress and she got the part.”

“I wish I had a character like this when I was younger,” Loberti told Netflix in May 2022. “And now I get to be that person for someone else through someone like Shawn, who has a track record of making a cultural shift happen, which is really cool.”

Mark Ruffalo and Hugh Laurie on joining the series and working with other members of the cast:

“I have two daughters and I really related to the way Daniel cares for Marie and how he would do anything for her,” said Ruffalo during production. “That connection is the heart of the [series].”

Hugh Laurie, who plays Marie’s reclusive uncle Etienne, described Louis Hofmann as a “movie star on the workbench finally being assembled because he has it all.”

Anthony Doerr’s Pulitzer Prize-winning bestseller All The Light We Cannot See will become an epic four-part Netflix limited series produced by Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps Entertainment (The Adam Project, Stranger Things, Free Guy, Shadow and Bone, Arrival) and written by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders). Levy directed all episodes.

Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, and Josh Barry of 21 Laps Entertainment serve as Executive Producers on the series. 21 Laps is the production company behind PGA Award-winning global phenomenon Stranger Things, Oscar® nominated film Arrival, Netflix hit series Shadow and Bone, hit movies Free Guy and The Adam Project. Knight also serves as an Executive Producer. Joe Strechay (See, The OA) serves as Associate Producer, Blindness and Accessibility Consultant.
