Margolis died Thursday at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City following a short illness, his son, actor, and Knitting Factory Entertainment CEO Morgan Margolis, announced.
Mr. Margolis, who had more than 160 credits in movies and on television, gained notice early on with memorable roles in Brian De Palma’s “Scarface” (1983) and the Jim Carrey comedy “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective” (1994).
He also became a go-to actor for the director Darren Aronofsky, appearing in his films “Pi” in 1998, “Requiem for a Dream (2000), The Fountain (2006), The Wrestler (2008), Black Swan (2010) and Noah (2014).
He received an Emmy nom for portraying Hector Salamanca on those shows and appeared in ‘Scarface,‘ ‘Ace Ventura: Pet Detective,’ ‘Oz‘ and six Darren Aronofsky movies.
Margolis went to Temple University briefly before moving to New York City, where he studied drama with Stella Adler and at the Actors Studio. He was perhaps most famous for his supporting roles in Scarface and the films of Darren Aronofsky, Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain, The Wrestler, and Black Swan. Aronofsky wrote the role of Father Avila in The Fountain specifically for Margolis.
