Big Brother Canada has announced that it is doing away with the 24/7 live feeds that allow fans to watch what the houseguests are up to inside the house. Instead, we will be introduced to something called Digital Dallies.
Digital Dallies are being described as “uncut content from inside the BBCAN house, offering viewers an extended peek into the houseguests’ lives.” What does that mean? Will we find out who has won competitions? Will I have anything to report on my “Spoilers at Glance” page, because we will be kept in the dark?
Those of you that have watched the live feeds know that BBCAN has never been all that generous with what’s shown on the live feeds. There were many days that the feeds have only streamed a few hours a day. We were often presented with a slideshow of messages saying, “We love you, but the houseguests need their space now” and “I spy with my little eye… Nothing, the feeds are down. Be right back.” Fans have complained about all the downtime on the live feeds that are called “24/7” and are only on a couple of hours a day.
“We are known for giving audiences behind-the-scenes access to Big Brother Canada, and we’re excited to debut Digital Dailies this season,” said Lisa Godfrey, Senior Vice President, Original Content and Corus Studios, Corus Entertainment as part of a statement on the announcement. “This new content offering came together after thoughtful consideration, with us taking a new approach to the BBCAN live feeds by offering an exclusive peek inside the house and moving away from the 24/7 live feeds.”
Continued Godfrey: “We are constantly looking for new ways to evolve the show to ensure we operate with the utmost duty of care and prioritize the mental health and well-being of the houseguests, and their family members, as well as our own production team who work closely on the series. We are happy to continue delivering the exclusive content we know audiences love, in a way that works best for our BBCAN family.” Source: Entertainment Weekly.
Arnold Shapiro, the original executive producer of Big Brother USA told me, “The live feeds and the fan sites are a double-edged sword; it helps to promote the show and keep viewers engaged, but then it is hard to create a show with surprises.”
In Canada, there haven’t been many issues with houseguests making racist, sexist, or homophobic remarks like the ones that have plagued Big Brother USA, which lead to unflattering headlines about the program and the houseguests who compete on it. Will BBUSA do away with the live feeds? It is very doubtful, as CBS uses the live feeds as a selling point for the Paramount Plus service. With the USA feeds, when they go off, we can watch hit shows from CBS, Nickelodeon, MTV, BET, Comedy Central, and Smithsonian Try it free!
