Though filming initially started in February 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic caused production to be placed on hold for nearly a year and half, with the race resuming in September 2021 with the same remaining teams but with a modified route through COVID-safe countries and with chartered travel. The season will premiere on January 5, 2022.
This season of The Amazing Race started with Keoghan contacting teams at their homes, much like The Amazing Race 28, and instructing them to travel to London.
According to van Munster, he contacted CBS after he and his crew arrived in Sweden to film in Lapland to halt the season due to the dangers of the emerging pandemic. One contributing factor for suspending filming was due to plans to travel towards Northern Italy, which had a worsening outbreak after filming started, with the original racecourse including visits to Austria, Vietnam, and South America. In June 2021, Keoghan stated that a plan to film safely had been established.
In order to restart the season, production chartered an Amazing Race-branded Titan Airways Boeing 757 for subsequent travel by teams and crew, which included four COVID testing teams, to reduce infection risk. To account for common travel on the chartered jet, teams were released from the charter plane with the same time difference when they arrived at the previous Pit Stop. Racers traveled to Switzerland to start filming the fourth leg on September 17, 2021, after nearly twenty months, making the previous Pit Stop effectively the longest in Amazing Race history.
The Amazing Race has earned thirteen Primetime Emmy Awards, ten of which being for the award for “Outstanding Reality-Competition Program”. Emmy-award-winning New Zealand television personality Phil Keoghan has been the host of the U.S. version of the show since its inception.
