Netflix was triumphant at the Emmys, with “The Crown,” the luxuriant chronicle of the ups and downs of the British royal family, won the prize for best drama, propelling Netflix to its first-ever victory in one of television’s biggest prizes.
“The Queen’s Gambit,” Netflix’s seven-episode show about a chess prodigy, won best limited series.
Prior to the best drama win for “The Crown,” only one streaming service, Hulu, had won in that category, when “The Handmaid’s Tale” took the award four years ago. And before the win for “The Queen’s Gambit,” no stremer had ever taken the best limited series statuette.
By the end of the ceremony, Netflix had received more awards than HBO for the first time, taking 44 Emmys, compared with 19 for HBO and its streaming platform, HBO Max.
AppleTV+ took major awards in drama, comedy, and limited series with “Ted Lasso” on winning for best comedy series.
The record number of nominees of color yielded only two Black winners, including RuPaul for “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and star-creator Michaela Coel’s writing award for “I May Destroy You.” HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch Show took home a Creative Arts Emmy for Outstanding Picture Editing for Variety Programming but lost out in four other categories.
