Twenty-five years ago, Erin Brockovich played a crucial role in drawing the connection between groundwater contamination in the town of Hinkley, California, and the energy company Pacific Gas & Electric. Her work helped trigger a landmark $333 million settlement with the residents of Hinkley. During the one-hour primetime special, “The Real Rebel: The Erin Brockovich Story,” cameras follow Brockovich as she visits Hinkley for the first time in 10 years. She reveals how the town is still reeling from the groundwater contamination and reunites with residents she first met when working on the case, most of whom moved away to escape exposure to the tainted water supply.

The special event dives into Brockovich’s little-known backstory as she opens up about the challenges she overcame while growing up in small-town Kansas, life as a single mom, being thrust into the spotlight – first portrayed by Julia Roberts in the Oscar(R)-winning film and now as the inspiration for the ABC series “Rebel” – and life today as an environmental activist. The program includes an interview with “Rebel” creator and executive producer Krista Vernoff, who reveals her surprising similarities to Brockovich in real life.
The special also features an exclusive interview with Brockovich’s daughter, Elizabeth Brockovich, about life today, over a decade after she first opened up to ABC News about her struggles with substance abuse. “The Real Rebel: The Erin Brockovich Story” airs on a special edition of “20/20” on Thursday, June 10 (8:00-9:00PM EDT), on ABC.
“The Real Rebel: The Erin Brockovich Story” is produced by ABC News. David Sloan is senior executive producer, and Matt Lombardi is executive producer. Janice Johnston is executive producer of “20/20.”
