Paras Atashnak Crowned ‘Big Brother Canada 6′ Winner

Derek Kesseler, Paras Atashnak, and Kaela Grant spent 69 days in the Big Brother Canada house located in on a soundstage in Etobicoke, ON.

Ten weeks ago, 16 strangers entered the “house” equipt with cameras and microphones to record their every move, every word, and every whisper. The goings on can be viewed by the fans on live feeds. The contestants compete for a $100,000 grand prize, a European “dream vacation,” and a home furnishing makeover worth $30,000 from The Brick, a Canadian retailer of furniture, mattresses, appliances and home electronics.

The contestants, called “houseguests” are eliminated from the house with weekly competitions and evictions determining who will win the show. The format of the show is similar to the American version, that will begin it’s 20th season this June on CBS, that was adapted from the original Dutch TV series of the same name, created by producer John De Mol in 1997.

This year, the Big Brother Canada houseguests were whittled down to three finalists, Derek Kesseler, Paras Atashnak, and Kaela Grant. By winning a competition Paras Atashnak won the power to pick who she wanted to face-off in a forum where a jury of seven evicted players who would decide which of the two finalists played the best game or was the worthiest contestant to be declared the winner. Atashnak chose Grant as the other finalist, sending Kesseler to be part of the jury.

So the contest came down to Kaela Grant, 25-year-old wine ambassador and law student Paras Atashnak from Vancouver, British Columbia in the first ever BBCAN all-female final two.

Grant and Atashnak both fielded questions from the jury about why they deserved to win the $100,000 grand prize.

Atashnak received six of the jury votes to secure her victory. Grant received one.

Before entering the house, Atashnak described herself as a closet “nerd” and future attorney. She said that she was confident that none of the houseguests would see past her bubbly shell to find her fierce intellect before it was too late and she’d made off with the grand prize winnings.

Some fans of BBCAN were ecstatic about Atashnak’s win, but others felt that Grant’s number of competition wins should have given her the win. The game of Big Brother requires multiple skills, both social, physical and mental. In the end, the jury can simply vote for the player they liked the most, but getting to the end is no easy task.
