MacGyver, the former ABC action/adventure series, which aired from 1985 to 1992 and followed Richard Dean Anderson as secret agent Angus MacGyver is is getting a reboot. CBS is developing MacGyver, a reimagining of the 1985 series about a resourceful and ingenious agent who improvises his way out of sticky situations using everyday items like rubber bands, chewing gum and a Swiss Army knife.

The CBS MacGyver is described as a 20-something MacGyver, who gets recruited into a clandestine organization where he uses his knack for solving problems in unconventional ways to help prevent disasters from happening.

The series has become a pop culture staple, famously parodied by Saturday Night Live‘s MacGruber. Remake-wise, Paramount previously tried to develop a Young MacGyver series, starring a pre-Supernatural Jared Padaleck.

MacGyver would look to join CBS’ recent foray into younger-skewing action procedurals with shows like Scorpion and Limitless.

Some of the other action-adventure TV series getting reboots this season include A-Team, Hart To Hart and Xena.

James Wan (“Insidious” and “Furious 7”) will direct, and R. Scott Gemmill (“NCIS: Los Angeles”) will pen the script and executive produce alongside original producer Henry Winkler and Michael Clear. Following the original series, two “MacGyver” made-for television movies aired on ABC in 1994.
