October 6, 2005  Episode #4: "To Betray or Not to Betray"

Previously on Survivor, Lydia was relieved she was spared from being voted out, Nakum won a comfort Reward Challenge, Margaret attempted to direct a resentful Judd and Bobby Jon in how to put up a tarp, Nakum won the Immunity Challenge playing the ancient Mayan game of Court Ball, and a discouraged Stephenie joined Yaxha at Tribal Council where Brianna was voted out.

Day 9
Nakum

We open to a sleeping Nakum Tribe and an intense sun. Cindy talks about the heat and how just when you think it can’t get hotter, it does. Margaret tells us that her tribe is pretty tired and weak. The heat is brutal, and the last challenge along with the heat has wiped them out. The mosquitoes are unbelievable. Judd is astonished with all the bugs too as we are shown visuals of bare backs covered in bites. Brandon: This place changes you. We are starving. It wears you down. It's easier to lay around and do nothing. Brandon points out that at least they are beating the other team; he can't imagine how hard it must be on the other team.

Meanwhile, Yaxha is fishing for minnows. Rafe explains that they set a big pot with cornbread in it into the water to attract and trap minnows. He says that he and Gary are a fine fishing machine! They spot a huge crocodile in the lake. We see the croc eating something and Jamie says that could have been one of them swimming across his path.

Jeff calls in the tribes for the Reward Challenge and points out that Brianna was voted out at the last Tribal Council. Jeff tells them that they have been here nine days and have endured so far arguably the toughest Survivor ever. They've earned a little relief. So today they will get a little break from the challenges and learn a little about what their tribe mates think about them, also giving them a chance to get a little insight about the other tribe. Jeff explains: "I will ask you a series of questions about your tribe mates. You will write your answers down and reveal when I tell you. Keep in mind your answers will have a direct effect on those tribe mates." They are asked questions and told they cannot write their own names down as answers.

Question #1: Which tribe member is most in need of nourishment? Jamie and Danni get the most votes and they are called up and each handed a green apple. Question #2: Which tribe member is the smelliest? Gary and Bobby Jon are called up to enjoy a bush shower with 5 gallons of water each. After showering, they return to their seats after everyone smells the new clean Gary. Question #3: Which man and which woman most deserve a picnic afternoon atop an ancient Mayan pyramid, returning to their camp later on this afternoon? Yaxha chooses Gary and Amy and Nakum selects Margaret and Judd. They all approach Jeff who sends them off with a huge basket full of chicken, potato salad, giant chocolate chip cookies and iced tea. They head off for their picnic. Question #4: Of the remaining tribe members, which tribe mate has the most tribe pride? Yaxha picks Brian and Nakum votes for Cindy.

Jeff says since Brian has the most tribe pride for Yaxha it is only fitting that he will remain a member of Yaxha. He tells him to take a spot on the Yaxha mat. The rest must drop their buffs and are now members of Nakum. They take their place on the Nakum mat where Jeff tells Cindy to meet her new tribe mates. (there are shocked faces all around) Jeff tells Cindy that she will remain Nakum, and because there were more Nakum members than Yaxha, the members of old Nakum must draw for buffs. Danni chooses first and draws blue and is now Yaxha. Brooke draws yellow and stays Nakum. The remaining are now members of Yaxha. The four people on the picnic will remain in the tribe they were on.image Part One [11 minutes]

The new Yaxha: Brian, Amy, Gary, Danni, Blake, Bobby Jon and Brandon (7 members - 3 from old Yaxha and 4 from old Nakum)

The new Nakum: Cindy, Margaret, Judd, Brooke, Stephenie, Lydia, Rafe and Jamie (8 members, four from each tribe)

Gary, Margaret, Judd and Amy are enjoying their pyramid-top picnic. Margaret is asking Amy questions about where she is from and tells her that members of Margaret’s tribe had guessed she was a Police Officer. Margaret then turns her attention to Gary. She comments about him being a Pro Football Player and he again denies it. They all agree the meal was great with only Margaret commenting that she feels somewhat guilty. Amy later tells us: "Margaret was asking Gary a question about Pro Football. Who knows?! Watch him be retired and he’s like a multi-millionaire! I’ll kill him! I’ll freaking kill him!"

Day 9
Yaxha

The new Yaxha tribe comes back from the reward and Brian is playing host. He shows the other members around and they find fruit provided for them to eat. A little later Amy and Gary return and Amy’s face is priceless. She is shocked and wonders if it is a joke. Later, Amy confesses: "I was completely blown away! I was like HEEEEY, what’s up! And I'm looking at Gary like we’re decimated here. GONE!" They all discuss who does what and lives were. Danni brings up Gary and his Pro Football career. He denies it. Danni finds it amusing and tells us later: "I thought Gary was gonna die when he looked at me, ‘cause I called him out right away about the whole Quarterback thing. Maybe he just doesn’t want anybody to know he was a Pro QB player, ‘cause you would think right away he doesn’t need the money.” Gary tells us that he doesn’t want to blow his cover because it’s his strategy.

Nakum
Margaret and Judd return to the new Nakum tribe. Margaret is really not impressed. Judd doesn’t seem fazed at all. Margaret thought they were there just for a visit. Margaret: "OH MY GOD! With this switch up today, I don’t feel safe AT ALL! Not at all. My head and stomach are so mixed up. With everything that’s happened here I'm trying frantically to scramble in my head to see what we’re gonna do. I think the old Nakum Tribe, Cindy, Brooke, Judd and myself will stick together. But who knows what Yaxha can do ‘cause it’s 4 against 4. So food in our belly, there has been a major turnaround and the GAME IS ON!" Margaret and Judd manage to get away from the others. She tries to work out where Judd stands but he isn’t really giving much away. Judd explains that he is happy the tribes have switched. He didn’t have a connection with any of his old members. There were too many men and as he put it he now feels like King Kong.

Stephenie and Jamie are talking about who should go out of the other tribe. They think it should be Brooke. Stephenie tells Jamie that they need to try and turn one of the others around. Stephenie is thinking about the numbers and maintaining control. Judd joins them, and he hits it off with Stephenie and Jamie right away. He talks about Brooke, Cindy and Margaret. Judd also confesses that he feels better with them than he did with the others as he never clicked with anyone from his tribe like he has with Stephenie and Jamie. We can see Margaret down below watching. You can tell Margaret isn’t impressed. Judd explains to us later that he feels no love for his old tribe and they need to "get outta my jungle."

Day 11
Yaxha
Amy is nervous about the numbers and feels they will be picked off because it sits at three old Yaxha’s vs. four old Nakum’s. She is right because the old Nakum four are talking about just that! Blake and Bobby Jon have decided their pick off order is Amy, Brian and then Gary. Amy still has a lot of pain in her ankle but is purposely not limping. She knows she needs to do well in this challenge or she’s gone.

It’s time for the Immunity Challenge which Lydia will sit out of because her tribe is a person up. The Challenge is to paddle out into the water and retrieve three bags. Then they paddle back and empty the bags of the clubs inside. They then throw the clubs at targets 30 / 40 / 50 feet away attempting to break them. The first team to break all three wins immunity. They are told that a team member can only break one target, and that people can pass off their turns.

Both tribes are paddling well and almost neck-in-neck, when Nakum yells ramming speed and rams Yaxha, pushing them off the course. Nakum takes a commanding lead, getting all their bags and racing back to shore. Stephenie throws first for Nakum. She breaks a close target. Meanwhile Yaxha has made it to shore and after a few quick attempts, Brian hands off his turn to Danni who breaks a target. Judd is too stubborn to pass his turn and keeps trying as Yaxha lands a second target. Finally Judd comes through, and they are tied up. It’s Jamie versus Brandon for the third tile. Jamie clips his tile as Brandon misses his altogether. Then Brandon lands it and wins immunity for Yaxha! The Nakum Tribe is headed off to Tribal Council.

Day 11

Nakum
Rafe explains that they are four from each tribe and need to try and flip someone from the other tribe, namely Judd. The other side is plotting to vote out Lydia. Margaret wants to know where Judd’s loyalties lie. She tells Judd he has to vote off Lydia from the other side explaining the numbers game. She wants old Nakum to stick together. Judd says they need to go for the weakest players and those are Lydia and Brooke. Judd is really thinking about the numbers game and whether he can truly trust Jamie and Stephenie. Judd tells Stephenie he is sticking with the plan he made with her and Jamie but tells us he isn’t making up his mind till he gets to Council. He wonders if his decision will come back to hit him in the face.
image Part Three [8 minutes]

At Tribal Council, Jeff muses over whether Stephenie has been unlucky or whether she is the bad luck. She says she has wondered that too. Margaret is asked if she has noticed any pairing off, and she admits she saw Judd with Stephenie and Jamie. Judd says he was just shooting the breeze with them and getting to know them. Lydia admits to being vulnerable because the new tribe members don’t  know her yet, but she isn’t ready to leave. Brooke feels the women are more vulnerable when strength is considered. Judd agrees with Jeff that it’s important to read people in the game and says he knows who he connects with.

It’s time to vote. Brooke votes for Lydia because of strength needed for Immunity Challenges. Rafe votes for Brooke. Margaret votes for Lydia because of loyalty to her old tribe mates. Jeff tallies and then starts reading the votes. “Lydia / Brooke / Lydia / Lydia / Brooke / Brooke” and it’s tied at three apiece. Then Brooke gets the last two votes. Brooke is the 4th person voted out of Survivor Guatemala. Margaret looks downcast. Brooke takes the walk of shame. Jeff reminds them all that tribal lines and loyalties are going to shift throughout the game. He cautions them to remember that every time they shift it makes it harder for people to trust.

Final words from Brooke: I did so much I never thought I could do. I proved myself on the trek but the other team did not get to see that. She wishes the girls of her original team good luck.

Next Time on Survivor: Judd is on the defensive, cultures clash at Yaxha and Lydia gets whacky!
