Carol Burnett became one of America's best-loved comedians and TV stars, thanks mostly to her warm persona and her willingness to twist her face into impossible grimaces. Now, looking back on her career, she has a lot to be proud of: triumphing over a grim childhood of poverty and abandonment; forging a career in the early days of television on Garry Moore's show, then realizing her dream of appearing on Broadway--under the direction of George Abbott, no less--in Once Upon a Mattress; raising three daughters and helping one, Carrie Hamilton, beat a terrible drug problem; and of course, starring in her CBS variety show that ruled the ratings for 10 seasons. You won't learn much new about Burnett's life or career from this Intimate Portrait, but if you're a fan, you'll find it as straightforward and comfortable as the woman herself--not a bad deal. --Anne Hurley
